Basic Information
Torrey Pines Golf Course is a 36-hole municipal golf facility on the west coast of the United States, owned by the city of San Diego, California. It sits on the coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean in the community of La Jolla, just south of Torrey Pines State Reserve. Opened 65 years ago in 1957, it was built on the site of Camp Callan, a U.S. Army installation during World War II. Since the late 1960s, Torrey Pines has hosted the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open, originally known as the San Diego Open. During those early editions at Torrey Pines, the course length was under 6,850 yards (6,265 m). Held annually in January or February, the tournament uses both courses for the first two rounds and the South Course for the final two rounds; it was held January 26–29 in 2022 and won by Luke List. Here has two 18-hole golf courses, North and South, both designed by William F. Bell (son of noted course architect William P. Bell). The famous ocean views are now enjoyed at the end of the round.
- South Course : The 18-hole South at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, CA is a public golf course that opened in 1957, was redesigned by Rees Jones in 2001, and is now 7,802 yards (7,134 m) in length from the back tees with par at 72. South at Torrey Pines Golf Course measures 7707 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 144 and a 78.2 USGA rating. The course features 5 sets of tees for different skill levels. The greens are poa annua grass and the fairways are kikuya. The South Course has hosted two U.S. Opens: Tiger Woods won in sudden-death in 2008 after an 18-hole playoff against Rocco Mediate, and Jon Rahm won in 2021. Torrey Pines hosts the San Diego City Amateur Golf Championships every June, and the Junior World Golf Championships every July.
- North Course : The North Course was redesigned by Tom Weiskopf in 2016, switching the nines so that the famous ocean views are now enjoyed at the end of the round. The Torrey Pines North Course was newly Renovated in 2016 by Tom Weiskopf. It is the host of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open (along with the South Course). The North Course is shorter and less expensive than its brother. For many, it is more scenic than the South, having more picture-perfect opportunities along the track. The North Course is more popular for the less-experienced golfer but will still put up a good fight for the better ones. The North is bordered on its north end by the Torrey Pines State Reserve.
June 4, 2022 – South Course
Wow, significant beautiful and great ocean view course. Here is iconic golf course at SoCal, I didn’t have chance to play here last 3 years even I know well. If San Diego citizens, they can book the tee time with local price. We played South course today, this was arranged as Company golf tournament at San Diego Day-1, we are very lucky. The course layout itself looks not so challenging, however rough is very tough, and hard coated fairway, massive difficult green. Bunkers are arranged around green, these bunkers contribute to make difficulty up.
Oh no, I want to forget my score today. My root cause was not-well ball control around green. 55 52 107
